Vocal and Instrumental Music Teacher

Position Description: Part-time 10 -15 hours per week plus special events and programs.

Zion Classical Academy, a classical, Christ-centered school in Hastings, Nebraska seeks a part-time Preschool – 6th Grade Music and Band teacher for the 2024-2025  academic year. Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education or K-8 Vocal and Instrumental Music,  along with a valid Nebraska state teaching certificate. Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience and knowledge of teaching both vocal and beginning instrumental music as well as Classical Christian pedagogy.  The candidate should be a mature Christian committed to lifelong learning and professional development, eager to nurture and inspire our students, and desire to work with a dedicated staff.  Zion Classical Academy is a Recognized Service Organization of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

Title: Part-Time Vocal and Instrumental Music Teacher ( 50%-60% = 10-12 hours/week)

Education, Training, Experience:

Required: 

1. Nebraska Teaching Certificate ( or person must be certifiable by the

Nebraska Department of Education through the certification process)

2.  Experience or training in vocal and instrumental music.

3. Experience working with children or giving music lessons

3. Christian faith and character

4. A commitment to lifelong learning and professional development

Desired: 

1. Experience in teaching

2. Training or knowledge of Classical Christian education pedagogy

3. Be synodically trained or work to become synodically

trained by the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod

Skills Required: 

1. Ability to work well with children and families

2. Understand and implement the curriculum goals of the classroom

4. Strong classroom management and student disciplinary skills

Duties of the Music Teacher:  

(included, but may not be limited to)

1. Be a Christian example to others by talk and actions.

2. Be an active member in good standing of a Christian church.

3. Maintain positive relationships with all members of the Zion Classical Academy staff.

4. Actively promote and live the mission statement of Zion Classical Academy.

5. Provide for the spiritual, social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of children.

6. Implement both instrumental and vocal music curriculum into the lessons of the varying age classes.

7.  Provide instruction in music classes for Preschool-6th grade to include basic vocal music, instruments such as recorders and handbells, rhythm and percussion instruments  as is age appropriate, and concert band instruments for 3rd-6th graders.  

8. Conduct evaluations of each 3rd – 6th grade student for the purpose of building an instrumental concert band. Work with students to establish a desire to learn an instrument. 

9. Conduct parent-teacher conferences as set by the schedule.

10. Attend staff meetings and special functions of the school as deemed necessary by the administrator.

11. Arrive at school no later than 30 minutes before the start of your  first class.

Remain at least 30 minutes after  your last class.

12. Fulfill many non-specific duties that would be generally expected of all Zion Classical Academy teachers. (Morning Supervision, Homework Club, Noon Supervision – TBD mutually agreed upon with the administration and Music teacher. 

13. Perform other tasks and duties that may be assigned outside of school hours:

  •  Veterans Day Program

  • Christmas Concert/program, 

  • Spring Concert 

  • Academic Honors Night/Graduation (Kindergarten and 6th Grade)  

  • There are other expected outreach opportunities with music, including but not limited to singing at local churches, caroling to area nursing homes and performing in the Hastings Downtown Celebration of Lights.

14. Participate in the staff rotation of leading daily staff devotions, before-school  or after-school duty, and lunch duty on days you are scheduled to be at school to teach.

15. Take professional development courses and meet all of the requirements necessary to maintain Nebraska state teaching certificate and continued growth in the understanding of Classical education.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and Benefits are determined by the Zion Classical Academy Board of Directors based upon the qualifications and experience of the individual selected for this position. 

Base salary:  $36,800

*Increases to base dependent upon years of service and education level.

There may be additional employment opportunity with neighboring private school.
