Public Relations & Communications/Media Technician

Purpose Statement

The job of Public Relations & Communications/Media Technician is to manage the school’s public-facing communications, social media presence, and audio/visual needs. This individual serves as a liaison between the school and community, ensuring consistent and professional messaging while also supporting technical needs for sound system, live events, and livestreaming as needed.

This job reports to the Superintendent and works in coordination with the building level Principal(s), Athletic Director, and IT Director.

Essential Functions

·         Manage and regularly update the school’s Facebook page and other social media platforms

·         Create engaging content (text, images, and video) to promote school events, news, and achievements

·         Set up, operate, and troubleshoot sound equipment for assemblies, programs, and special events

·         Coordinate and manage livestreaming for events as needed

·         Assist with internal communications and newsletters

·         Collaborate with staff to capture photos and videos for school promotion

·         Maintain digital media files and archives

·         Ensure all messaging aligns with the school’s values and branding

Other Functions

·         Coordinate with Principals, coaches, staff, and staff of other school systems and other entities as required.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.

 Confidentiality

Strict confidentiality must be maintained at all times in accordance with the school’s confidentiality policy and in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws. This is especially important when handling communications, social media content, photographs/videos of students, and other school-related media.

Attendance & Work Schedule

Consistent and dependable attendance is essential. While the standard work schedule is Monday through Friday (40 hours/week), occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to support school events, livestreams, or urgent communications. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible.

Interaction & Communication

This role requires regular interaction with school leadership, faculty, students, families, and the broader community. The Public Relations & Communications/Media Technician must communicate professionally and with discretion, both in writing and in person. Courtesy, tact, and a service-oriented attitude are essential, especially when representing the school through digital platforms, public relations, and media outreach.

Skills & Technical Competency

The position requires a mix of communication and technical skills. Key competencies include:

·         Managing social media platforms (e.g., Facebook)

·         Writing clear, engaging, and professional content

·         Operating sound and video equipment

·         Basic photo and video editing

·         Using email marketing tools and content design platforms (e.g., Canva)

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and school-specific software (training provided as needed)

The ability to learn and adapt to new tools or platforms quickly is important in this fast-paced media environment.

Knowledge Requirements

Knowledge of communications best practices, digital media trends, and basic audio/visual tech is essential. Strong grammar, spelling, and written communication skills are required. Familiarity with privacy standards, copyright laws, and FERPA regulations is preferred.

Flexibility & Adaptability

This role requires the ability to juggle multiple tasks, adjust to changing priorities, and work with a wide variety of people. Flexibility is key—especially during high-profile events, media requests, or urgent communications. The Coordinator must be comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with school staff and leadership.

Responsibility

The Communications & Media Coordinator works under limited supervision and is expected to represent the school in a professional, friendly, and polished manner at all times. They play a critical role in shaping public perception and internal morale through timely and accurate communication.

Working Environment

This job is performed in a school office and event setting, with duties requiring both desk work and on-site support for programs and events. Physical demands may include light lifting and extended periods of standing or walking during events. Approximately 60% of the time will be spent sitting, with the remainder divided between walking and standing.

         Experience – Job related experience with managing social media accounts, knowledge of sound equipment, graphic design experience is desired.

         Education – High school diploma or equivalent required. Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.

Salary: Determined based on education/relevant experience. Range of $48,330-$89,944
