1/2-Time Middle School ELA Teacher

St. John Lutheran School is seeking a half-time (20-hour per week) English Language Arts teacher to serve students in grades 5 and 7. This position involves planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate ELA instruction that supports strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills while fostering a positive and well-managed classroom environment. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching 5th and/or 7th grade ELA and be fluent in the Science of Reading or willing to pursue training in this approach. Strong classroom management skills are essential, along with effective communication, a strong work ethic, and the ability to build positive relationships with middle-school students. As a ministry of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, St. John Lutheran School seeks a teacher who is comfortable openly sharing faith in Jesus, supports the beliefs of the LCMS, and integrates a Christian worldview into daily instruction. A Lutheran Teacher Diploma or LCMS Lutheran background is preferred.

St. John Lutheran School is a Preschool–8th grade elementary school with an average 13:1 student-to-teacher ratio. This mission places a strong emphasis on relationships and meaningful connections with students and families, alongside a commitment to educational excellence. 

The most likely structure for this half-time position would include teaching two 90-minute ELA blocks—one in 5th grade and one in 7th grade. The instructional day would begin around 12:10 p.m. and conclude around 3:30 p.m., after student dismissal, totaling approximately 17.5 hours of in-class teaching per week. Additional responsibilities include biweekly staff meetings (currently held from 3:35–4:30 p.m.), special school events, and parent-teacher conferences. Lesson planning, grading, and family communication are expected to occur outside of scheduled teaching hours. For compensation purposes, the position is calculated at approximately 22 hours per week, with total salary and benefits estimated at $25,924, depending on experience and advanced degrees. This compensation includes retirement and disability benefits.

This position begins August 1, 2026.
