Instructor, Physics – FT
Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Physics instructor is responsible for instructing students in various Physics courses in classroom, online, and distance learning settings. As needed, the Physics instructor may also be assigned to teach mathematics classes. Teaching assignments for this position include, but are not limited to: Descriptive Physics and Technical Physics, and potentially Beginning, Intermediate, or College Algebra, Technical Math, and/or Business Math. Teaching assignments may include dual-credit courses. This instructor develops lessons, activities, assignments, and assessments and implements teaching strategies focused on engaged and active learning. The instructor advises students, monitors and evaluates student progress, and keeps accurate student records. This is a full-time regular position.
Essential Functions
Provide Instruction to Students in Program Courses as Assigned
- Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned.
- Teach courses in Physics, which may include, but are not limited to, Descriptive Physics and Technical Physics, and, as needed, mathematics courses.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom/Internet/distance learning setting that are appropriate to individual student needs and include engaged learning activities, multimedia presentations, and computer-aided instruction, lectures, small groups, and demonstrations.
Provide for Student Evaluation and record-keeping
- Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Areas
- Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.
Participate in Division and College Meetings and Committees
- Attend division, department, college, and staff meetings and serve on committees.
Serve as an Academic Advisor for Students
- Serve as an Academic Advisor to Academic Transfer Program students. Tasks included in this area include: assisting students in selecting and registering for courses; advising students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division/college policies and procedures; and generally, serving as the first line of communication between students and the college staff.
Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Material
- In cooperation with other College Physics faculty, develop and/or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on the approved college curriculum form.
- Develop, revise, and maintain classroom policies, grading structures, and strategies.
- Review, evaluate, and recommend textbooks for course use.
Function as a Member of the Arts and Sciences Division Team
- Interact with colleagues, students, staff, and supervisors in a manner that will project a positive image of the Academic Transfer Program, Science Department, Arts & Sciences Division, and the College, and which promotes/facilitates instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and orientation as assigned.
Professional Development
- Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement.
Performs Other Functions Related to Teaching Assignments
- Provide information and data that will assist in the preparation of supply and equipment orders, course schedules, book orders, and other necessary reports.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in physics or a related discipline such as engineering or mathematics, OR Bachelor’s degree in Physics or related field, PLUS a minimum of 6 graduate credits in Physics or related field and an approved plan to complete a Master’s degree within 2 years that includes 18 graduate credits in the subject area.
- Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 courses/sections at secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility.

Benefits
SCC BEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).
Schedule
This is a full-time regular position with an implied 40-hour work week, based on a 175-day work calendar. Teaching assignments for this position are scheduled and approved by the College between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday based on the instructional work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
