STS NPHS Automotive Technology Teacher
Position Summary
The High School Automotive Technology Teacher provides instruction in automotive systems, maintenance, and repair while preparing students for careers in the transportation industry. The teacher delivers hands-on and classroom instruction aligned with state CTE standards, industry expectations, and workplace safety practices. Instruction focuses on developing technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, employability skills, and industry certification readiness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum

Plan and deliver engaging instruction in automotive technology including:

Engine systems
-
Brakes
-
Electrical systems
-
Suspension and steering
-
Drivetrain systems
-
Preventative maintenance
-
Diagnostics and troubleshooting
-

Develop lesson plans aligned with state CTE standards and district curriculum.

Integrate academic concepts such as math, science, and technical reading within automotive instruction.

Provide differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs.
Laboratory & Shop Management
-
Maintain a safe, organized automotive lab/shop environment.
-
Instruct and enforce proper use of tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
-
Manage automotive equipment, tools, and instructional materials.
-
Coordinate maintenance and inventory of shop tools and equipment.
Student Skill Development
-
Prepare students for industry certifications (such as ASE student certifications where applicable).

Provide real-world automotive diagnostic and repair experiences.
-
Teach employability skills including teamwork, communication, work ethic, and professionalism.
Assessment & Student Support
-
Evaluate student progress through written, practical, and performance-based assessments.

Maintain accurate records of student performance and attendance.

Provide feedback and support for student improvement.
Program Development

Maintain partnerships with local automotive businesses and industry representatives.

Assist with work-based learning opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, and apprenticeships.

Participate in CTE advisory committees.

Promote the automotive program to students and the community.
Professional Responsibilities

Participate in professional development related to automotive technology and teaching strategies.

Maintain required certifications and teaching credentials.

Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administration to support student success.
Qualifications
Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology, Career & Technical Education, or related field
OR -
Industry experience with eligibility for alternative teaching certification
Certification
-
Valid state teaching certificate with endorsement in Career & Technical Education or Automotive Technology (or ability to obtain)

ASE certifications preferred
Experience
-
Automotive repair or technician experience preferred

Experience working with high school students preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques

Ability to teach technical concepts to students with varying ability levels

Knowledge of shop safety procedures and OSHA guidelines

Strong classroom and shop management skills

Ability to integrate technology and industry standards into instruction

Effective communication and collaboration skills
Working Conditions

Combination of classroom instruction and automotive lab/shop environment

Exposure to noise, automotive fluids, tools, and mechanical equipment

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods
