High School STS (Woods and Construction) Teacher

Norris High School is accepting applications for a high school Skilled and Technical Sciences teacher (Woods and Construction) for the 2024-2025 school year.  The Norris Skilled and Technical Science Department strives to prepare job-ready students in the areas of computer aided drafting and design, woodworking, engineering, building construction, small engine mechanics, plastics and automation, machine tool, welding, and electricity and electronics.  The candidate chosen to fill this position will work closely with experienced STS teachers in both the middle and high schools in planning program curriculum and organizing SkillsUSA activities.  Program specifics include:

  • Dedicated CADD classroom

  • Woodworking shop

  • Ag mechanics and machine tool shop

  • On-site/off-site residential building course

  • Active SkillsUSA chapter with a history of excellence

  • Base pay 2024-25:  $40,100

  • Full single or family insurance

  • 11 non specified leave days per year

  • 15 additional paid days of parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child

  • Head SkillsUSA advisor:  8% of base

  • Assistant SkillsUSA advisor:  5% of base

  • All years of experience and relevant graduate credit applied towards salary advancement

Required qualifications: certified or able to obtain provisional certification as a skilled and technical sciences teacher.  

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaches basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of computer aided drafting and design, woodworking, engineering, building construction, small engine mechanics, plastics and automation, machine tool, welding, and electricity and electronics while utilizing the courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

  • Leads effective instruction in a laboratory setting.

  • Evaluates each student’s growth in skills, knowledge, and contribution in skilled and technical sciences curricular areas.

  • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent feasible.

  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment to ensure the overall safety of students.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the skilled and technical sciences areas.

  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

  • Works cooperatively with other skilled and technical sciences teachers at the middle and high school levels in planning a balanced skilled and technical sciences program.

  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.

  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve problems.

  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.

  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Selects and requisitions consumable supplies, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.

  • Participates in the curriculum review process and other professional development programs.

  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

  • Performs other duties as needed, as assigned by the supervisor.
