Elementary Special Education (LIFE) Teacher
JOB TITLE: Special Education (LIFE) Teacher, K-4
(2026 – 2027 School Year)
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid, current Nebraska teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education
- Training and/or experience in special education teaching
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Student Programs
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Building Principal and Director of Student Programs
JOB GOAL: Provide instruction to students with significant cognitive and/or pervasive developmental disabilities. The needs of these students require a functional curriculum focused on the acquisition of daily living and vocational skills leading to a successful transition to adult life within the community. The instruction will focus on practical academics, communication, community, domestic, leisure/recreation, and vocational skills utilizing an approved curriculum. These programs emphasize communication, maximum independence, and opportunities to generalize skills in natural settings as well as participation in general education activities with peers.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine month school year or as established by the Board of Education
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of administrative guidelines and evaluated by building principal and/or Special Education Coordinator
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Consistent and punctual attendance on the job site is required
- Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team for evaluating, planning, and implementing programs for students
- Has primary responsibility for instruction and supervision of students in academics, social skills, and community exploration
- Provide an individualized special education program for all identified students in their supervision in accordance with each student’s IEP
- Coordinates with the building administrator, standard classroom teachers, and specialists to ensure that the special education program is an integral part of the building’s educational endeavor
- Participates in all school-related activities and meetings that are expected of other teachers in the building
- Assure that accurate communication is maintained with each student’s parent or guardians to keep them informed of progress and program
- Update Individualized Educational Programs in accordance with Rule 51: Rules and Standards Governing Special Education Programs
- Coordinate with itinerant staff (ex. physical and occupational therapist(s) and speech pathologist(s) to ensure a totally consistent functionally integrated program
- Develop an appropriately functional curriculum to the greatest extent possible
- Engage students in non-school instruction as appropriate
- Serve as an active member of the multidisciplinary team
- Keeps accurate attendance and progress records
OCCASIONAL
- Relates with staff, parents, and community through positive professional cooperation
- Suggests positive recommendations for the continuing review and development of curriculum
- Remains current with professional training and shows evidence of regular professional growth
- Assumes responsibility periodically for conferences with parents
OTHER REQUIREMENTS (Intellectual, Sensory):
- Strong communication skills in both oral and writing
- Skills in leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution
- Skills in human relations, assessment, and evaluations
- Interpretive skills
