Teacher for the Visually Impaired

JOB TITLE: Teacher for the Visually Impaired

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college
- Valid, current Nebraska teaching certificate
- Experience – classroom teaching/work with the visually impaired
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Programs and Building Administrators
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Director of Student Programs and Building Administrators
JOB GOAL: To provide service necessary for the educational academic improvement of visually
impaired students in the school setting. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired will
provide specialized instruction and services to meet the unique educational needs
of students with visual impairments ages Birth-21. Teachers of the Visually Impaired
will conduct functional vision/learning media assessments and provide written reports.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: – Nine-month school year as established by the Board
of Education
– Birth-3 summer services, as needed
EVALUATION: – Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with
the provisions of administrative guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Consistent and punctual “on site” attendance at the worksite is an essential job function
- Participates in the interdisciplinary staffing which determines the eligibility and appropriate educational planning and in the periodic re-evaluation of program results and students who require special education services and programs
- Assists in observations and evaluations of students found with vision losses
- Keeps accurate records of attendance and progress
- Counsels and confers with students, parents, teacher and others serving the special education needs of each child
- Develops plans which will insure comprehensive and continuous services to students
- Orders or provides special books and other alternative media to improve the education of the visually impaired
- Participates in in-service activities designed to improve skills and learning of self and students served
- Provides schools with periodic reports as well as year end reports of students served
- Teacher is willing to take an active part in the formation of the budget for the visually impaired.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS (Intellectual, Sensory):
- Strong communication skills both oral and written
- Skills in leadership, organization, and problem solving
