Reports ToAssistant Superintendent of Human Resources

Position Description:  As a member of the Student Services team, this director will oversee and lead the student services program for the Westside Community School District. 

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks: The Director of Student Services leads and oversees six major areas of responsibility:

    Attendance and Discipline

  • Implement and monitor District attendance policies and procedures
  • Lead building administrators in ensuring due process is provided in all suspensions, expulsions and long-term suspensions
  • Lead contact and work with area agencies (i.e., GOALS Center, County Attorney’s office) to address problems of chronic absenteeism and truancy
  • Oversee anti-bullying committee and develop plans to address inappropriate student behaviors
  • Lead District efforts to minimize chronic student absence 

    Enrollment, Registration and Records

  • Develop and manage strategic plan for student recruitment, retention, and enrollment
  • Supervise Welcome Center staff
  • Administer Option Enrollment programs, including process for admissions under that program
  • Implement and monitor student enrollment process, including Kindergarten outreach efforts
  • Lead and oversee operation and updating of student information system (Powerschool, NSSRS and Others)
  • Approve or deny applications for In-District Transfers in accordance with established standards
  • Manage response to requests for student records, including high school transcripts
  • Ensure welcome center staff remain current in student information systems operation as well as state and federal reporting requirements

    Reporting and Compliance

  • Oversee preparation and submission of all student data reports to Nebraska Department of Education
  • Oversee preparation and submission of data for biannual Civil Rights Data Collection to federal government
  • Serve as Title IX Coordinator for students
  • Serve as a Local Liaison responsible for compliance with McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act
  • Serve as a Local Liaison responsible for compliance with Poverty Plan 

    School Safety, Security and Emergency Operations

  • Supervise School Resource Officers
  • Oversee District planning for emergency and crisis response
  • Provide for the maintenance of building-level safety plans
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement to conduct annual safety audits
  • Manage District security systems to maximize student and staff safety 

    Student Health and Welfare

  • Supervise and lead School Nurses
  • Oversee and lead District Social Workers
  • Oversee and lead School Counselors and PBIS
  • Monitor and maintain threat assessment tools
  • Coordinate with foundation to support families lacking access to resources required for student success
  • Collaborate with Director of Special Services to improve student access to mental health services
  • Monitor and ensure documentation of District reports to Child Protective Services
  • Promote a safe student environment for ALL students founded in PBIS
  • Helps develop school climate and conditions that help unsure maximum student achievement
  • Establish ongoing communication among parents, community, school personnel and community agency representatives
  • Assists in the development of effective culturally sensitive and result-driven strategies for providing information to low-income, hard-to-reach and limited English proficient families
  • Maintains telephone and electronic contacts, activity logs, mailing list of families and professionals
  • Represents the interests of and advocating for families on appropriate councils, committees and task forces
  • McKinney Vento homeless education liaison
  • Title IX Coordinator for student complaints

    Transportation

  • Oversee and lead transportation of eligible District resident students to and from school
  • Oversee and lead transportation of eligible non-resident students to and from school through the Option Enrollment program.
  • Participate in the development of transportation routes to maximize the efficient use of District resources
  • Service as a lead and liaison between students, staff and District’s transportation provider

    Other Duties as Assigned, including

  • Receive and investigate parent and community concerns
  • Executive Member of EOT, Emergency Operation Team
  • Provide for the training of Administrative Assistants
  • Coordinate with administrators and staff for the purpose of providing staff development to improve achievement of all students.
  • Facilitate meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of implementing and maintaining programs and services which achieve District’s desired objectives
  • Participate in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
  • Provide principals with current research-based models for the purpose of use in identification of students and for intervention in their academic progress
  • Research parent and staff concerns for the purpose of counseling them on program contact, their obligations and responsibilities and negotiate solutions
