College Advisor – TCA/Undeclared – FT

Under the direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of Advising and working in collaboration with the Principal/Director of The Career Academy (TCA), the College Advisor provides holistic advising to TCA students from the point of admission throughout their academic career at Southeast Community College. This College Advisor will also work with students who enter SCC without a program of study (undeclared students). This is a full-time regular position.

Essential Functions

Proactive and developmental onboarding:

  1. The College Advisor will evaluate admission test scores and transcripts, analyze pre-orientation student assessments, recommend interventions when appropriate, and advise students based on their interests, strengths, values, and goals.
  2. The College Advisor will establish connections with TCA students in their first term through meetings, presentations, and regular messaging.
  3. The College Advisor will assist undeclared students with advising, course registration, and general academic planning.

Career advising:

  1. The College Advisor will assist students in clarifying and confirming academic paths and career choices. This may involve interpreting career assessments and discussing results with students to develop academic, career, and personal plans consistent with their interests, values, and strengths.
  2. The College Advisor will counsel TCA and undeclared students on different SCC programs and provide guidance and academic planning to best facilitate paths toward SCC degrees.

Academic advising:

  1. The College Advisor is responsible for providing continued academic advising for their assigned students. This may involve explaining general education and degree requirements and evaluating transfer credit.
  2. The College Advisor will provide accurate information and guidance to students as they make decisions about traditional classroom and distance learning options, selection of a program of study, and SCC policies and procedures, and will assist students in developing an academic plan that integrates with their current responsibilities and life goals.
  3. The College Advisor will refer students to appropriate support services such as Admissions, Testing Center, Transitions, Accommodations, and Financial Aid as necessary.
  4. The College Advisor will serve as the primary point of contact for retention alerts, reinstatements, and academic concerns regarding undeclared students.

Ongoing success coaching:

  1. The College Advisor will serve as a continuous resource to their assigned students.
  2. The College Advisor will assist students with academic, career, and interpersonal skill development to heighten their academic success and will support, educate, and advocate for students experiencing challenges within and outside of the classroom. This may involve referring the student to SCC services and/or community agencies.

Program planning and implementation:

  1. The College Advisor will plan, develop, and implement a variety of programs and services that will increase the success and retention of their assigned students and in the student population as a whole.

Collaboration:

  1. The College Advisor will interact with faculty and staff within SCC, at other colleges and universities, and with a variety of outside agencies and organizations in collaborative efforts geared toward enhancing student success, retention, and completion.
  2. The College Advisor will increase awareness of and commitment to holistic advising at SCC among faculty, staff, and students, and will work directly with faculty within their assigned academic cohort to plan and implement joint activities that foster student success.
  3. The College Advisor will work closely with TCA staff to provide appropriate SCC data focused on student success.

Data management:

  1. The College Advisor will use software and other designated tools to record and manage quantitative and qualitative data on students’ progress at SCC.

Professional development:

  1. The College Advisor will participate in professional development opportunities in order to stay up to date on best practices in student development, advising, onboarding, and overall student success and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two (2) years* of work experience working with students in an educational environment

* A Master’s degree may substitute for one year of work experience.

$49,837 per year

Benefits

SCC BEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).

Schedule

Normal working hours for this full-time regular position are scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour work week, based on a 260-day work calendar. Special projects, campus events, assignments, and periodic increases in workload may require an increase in work hours on evenings or weekends as needed.
