Norfolk Elementary School Media Specialist

JOB TITLE: ELEMENTARY  MEDIA  SPECIALIST

 

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s Degree in library science (or completed coursework in progress toward this endorsement)

Valid Nebraska teaching certificate with an endorsement in library science  

REPORTS TO: Building Administrators (Grant, Lincoln/Montessori, Washington, and Westside Elementary)

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM:  Building Administrators

JOB GOAL: To organize and conduct a learning situation which will enable students to master appropriate levels of media skills and a respect for the materials they use. Assist teachers in organizing and conducting engaging learning experiences by aiding in the selection of materials from the media center.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine month year or as established by the Board of Education

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of administrative guidelines

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates consistent and punctual attendance at the work site
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management skills
  • Assists and instructs students and teachers in effective use of the library media
  • Stimulates and guides students to become skillful in the use of library materials and technology
  • Encourages lifetime reading habits and a love of learning
  • Supervises library workers  (volunteers, students, support staff)
  • Promotes and role models technology and information literacy
  • Provides professional assistance to teachers in planning, development and the use of media materials
  • Assist students in acquiring proficient research skills
  • Fosters a collaborative and welcoming learning environment
  • Inform administrators of the needs and services relating to the media materials
  • Develops budgets in line with media center needs
  • Troubleshoots audiovisual equipment and materials
  • Participate in curriculum planning and development
  • Select, acquire and organize materials to supplement and enrich the curriculum
  • Protect intellectual freedom
  • Develop units of instruction in cooperation with teachers
  • Plan media program so that it supports district and building goals
  • Develop and maintain materials
  • Implement policies and procedures so that students and teachers have easy access to the materials, equipment and programs of the media center on all days school is in session
  • Catalog print and non-print materials and prepare lists of same for teachers
  • Arrange for the repair and upkeep of the media materials
  • Establish rules and procedures for the circulation of materials which will ensure fair and maximum use by the teachers and students
  • Evaluate and enhance the media program

  • Communicate and cooperate with fellow staff members
  • Exhibit tact and self-control in dealing with parents
  • Work closely with building principals concerning material needs
  • Exhibit patience, openness and concern when dealing with students

  • Continue professional growth through reading, course work, membership and participation in professional organizations
