Elementary Guidance Counselor

JOB TITLE:  ELEMENTARY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR, Lincoln/Montessori

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters Degree in guidance from an accredited university/college
  • Valid, current Nebraska teaching certificate with Guidance and Counseling endorsement
  • Successful classroom teaching
  • Interest in helping students, teachers, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability in human relations skills.
  • Has education and training in fields of counseling, psychology, sociology and related fields or willingness to pursue further education.

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM:  Building Principal; Central Office Directors

JOB GOAL:  To help students overcome such academic, personal, emotional, and social problems as interfere with their learning and adjustment to school

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Nine month year or as established by the Board of Education

EVALUATION:  Evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the district’s Personnel Evaluation Policy

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Conducts group counseling in social skills, affective education, self-esteem, decision-making, or other counseling activities as preventative and corrective measures.
  • Assists teachers with intervention strategies or alternative instruction for students prior to admission to student service programs or to those students who fail to qualify for student service programs.
  • Assists students directly with academic, personal, emotional, and social problems.
  • Leads Student Assistance Teams and participates with other personnel in Individual Education Plans or Challenge Program Admission.
  • Promotes preventative discipline practices, intervenes in behavior problems, and assists teachers in resolving them.
  • Teaches lessons to large groups of students on a variety of topics including social skills, character education, study skills, and careers.
  • Oversees, analyzes, and interprets student achievement scores on standardized achievement tests, reading tests, etc. and recommends action to remedy weak areas for individual students, classes, and school.
  • Works with teacher and other staff members to familiarize them with services offered to students and to improve educational assistance to students through school and community personnel.
  • Counsels with parents toward improving home situations whereby more favorable conditions will be attained in regard to school work, behavior, attendance, and interest.
  • Help families better understand the school and its program.
  • Meets periodically with district guidance team
  • Assists in supervision of students when needed
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Exceptional decision making skills
  • Skills in leadership, interpersonal relations, organization, prioritization, problem solving and conflict management, assessment and evaluation
