Assistant Activities Director

JOB TITLE:  SENIOR HIGH – ASSISTANT ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid certificate in administration and supervision preferred, but not required
  • Minimum of five years teaching and/or coaching experience
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate

REPORTS TO: Senior High Principal and Athletic Director

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Senior High Principal; Athletic Director; Superintendent of Schools

JOB GOAL: Supports the planning, organization, and daily operation of the school’s athletic programs to ensure a safe, equitable, and well-run experience for 9-12 student athletes.  This role assists with scheduling, compliance with district and state regulations, budget oversight, and coordination of coaches, facilities, and events.  The position also helps promote sportsmanship, academic balance, and community engagement while advancing the overall mission of the school’s athletic department.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 189 days

EVALUATION: Evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the district’s Personnel Evaluation Policy

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Consistent and punctual “on-site” attendance at the worksite is an essential job function
  • Assist the Athletic Director with essential duties below, as needed:
    • Serve as a liaison for the operation of the Norfolk Panther Booster Clubs (athletic, theatre, music) and attend meetings
    • Responsible for updating the school’s activities calendar
    • Responsible for scheduling and management of all senior high athletic events, and assigning officials and other workers
    • Responsible for the oversight of all senior high fundraising activities/promotions
    • Responsible for the supervision, scheduling of coaches, and assigning concessions for all senior high athletic events
    • Responsible for the update, accuracy, and distribution of the coach’s handbook
    • Responsible for the concession stand needs
    • Maintain, or cause to be maintained, an accurate overall budget as it pertains to the athletic department
    • Actively involved with the head coach in the formation of athletic budget requests in each sport at the senior high school
    • Responsible for the scheduling and oversight of the Johnny Carson Theatre
    • Ensure all sports clubs using the Norfolk Public Schools name abide by state law and district policies
    • Responsible for keeping the public informed by news releases to the local news media, appearances before service organizations, and reports to the Board of Education
    • Responsible, as facilities manager, to host NSAA athletic events at the senior high
    • Serve as a member of the interviewing team when candidates are being considered for coaching and activity sponsor positions at the senior high
    • Serve on staff committees, hold membership in professional organizations, attend appropriate clinics, and become thoroughly familiar with innovative methods in his/her field
    • May be assigned a number of custodians and secretaries each semester for evaluation purposes
    • Assist the building principal in interpreting procedures and policies
    • Assist the senior high principal with the general supervision of student activities scheduled outside the regular school day, both at home and at other sites
    • Encourage coaches/sponsors to involve themselves in professional advancement through gaining additional hours in formal education courses, professional reading, attendance at clinics and workshops, and various other activities
    • Strive to develop a good rapport with staff members and to maintain high staff morale.
    • Maintain, or cause to be maintained, an accurate inventory of all athletic equipment and supplies at grades 9-12
    • Inform coaches, grades 9 through 12, of rules meetings and be responsible for their attendance at such meetings
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned by the building principal and Superintendent of Schools
    • Collaborate with Junior High Activities Director to ensure appropriate and continuity of programs
    • Assist with graduation ceremony
