Elementary Guidance Counselor

Crete Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the position of elementary guidance counselor for the 2021-2022 school year. Benefits include paid health insurance, long term disability insurance, and personal and sick leave. 

Essential Requirements: 

  • Masters Degree or higher
  • Nebraska Teaching Certificate with guidance counselor endorsement 
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background check

Essential Functions: 

  • Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job
  • Perform the identified tasks 
  • Posses and utilize knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities

 

Required Job Tasks:

  • Counsel students regarding educational issues such as school adjustment, truancy, and study habits.
  • Counsel students to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their education or personal situations that may impact on their education.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, other counselors, and administrators to resolve students’ behavioral, academic, and other problems. Utilize resources to effectively communicate with others with different communication abilities (e.g. non-English speaking, hearing impaired).
  • Provide crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at schools.
  • Identify cases involving domestic abuse or other family problems affecting students’ development.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children’s progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.
  • Prepare students for later educational experiences by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Encourage students and/or parents to seek additional assistance from mental health professionals or other community resources when necessary.
  • Observe and evaluate students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students’ needs and progress.
  • Conduct follow-up interviews with student counselees to determine if their needs have been met.
  •  Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
  • Plan and conduct orientation programs and group conferences to promote the adjustment of students to new life experiences such as starting a new school or a new grade level.
  • Assess needs for assistance such as rehabilitation and refer students to the appropriate school program for services.
  • Address community groups, faculty, and staff members to explain available counseling services.
  • Compile and study educational information to assist counselees in determining and carrying out educational objectives.
  • Review transcripts, evaluate students’ educational abilities and developmental levels and communicate with students and parents or guardians to ensure readiness to begin school and to ensure that students are placed in the appropriate grade levels and appropriate educational programs.
  • Provide special services such as alcohol and drug prevention programs, anti-bullying programs, and classes that teach students to handle conflicts without resorting to violence.
  •  Establish and supervise peer counseling and peer tutoring programs as directed by supervisor.

Teaching Tasks: 

  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students and administration.
  • Instruct through lectures, discussions, demonstrations and other appropriate methods for the subject area.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and tests to evaluate students’ progress.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning for all students, including students with individual education plans, using approved curricula. 
  • Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve students’ behavioral and academic needs.
  • Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests.

Required Knowledge:

The Elementary Counselor/Social Worker is to possess and effectively utilize knowledge

in the following areas:

  • Therapy and Counseling—Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
